Te Oranga Ki Ākarana (TOKĀ) is the Māori Medical Students Society at Waipapa Taumata Rau, The University of Auckland.
Established in 2024 by Auckland Te Oranga Representatives, TOKĀ was formed to unite and strengthen the collective voice of Māori medical students, ensuring tauira rata Māori are supported, represented, and empowered throughout their medical journey. Our mahi is guided by four pou: Whakapiri (connection and whanaungatanga), Whakawhanake (growing knowledge of Te Ao Māori), Whakatairanga (advocacy), and Mana Motuhake (upholding Māori leadership in medicine).
TOKĀ provides a space for tauira rata to connect, strengthen their Māori identity, and be affirmed as future Māori doctors. Through wānanga, Māori health panels, social outings, and kaupapa events, we advocate for tauira needs within the medical school and wider university.
Our Rūnanga (committee) are self-appointed Kaitautoko who lead mana-enhancing kaupapa and initiatives to ensure Māori medical students are supported and able to thrive as Māori in medical education and beyond.
